# Recover your Epson printer locked by the waste ink pads

When the internal counter reaches its limit, the printer stops working and commercial sites ask you to pay for a key. Here you will find free tools that safely reset the counter, plus a complete guide to avoid damaging your machine.

## Why did your Epson stop printing?

Epson inkjet printers collect leftover ink from print-head cleaning cycles in an absorbent pad (the “waste ink pad”) or a maintenance tank. An internal counter stored in EEPROM estimates how much ink it has absorbed.

When that counter reaches the defined limit, the printer locks up and shows messages like “a waste ink pad is at the end of its service life” or errors such as E‑11, even when the pad physically has room left.

The official route is taking it to a service center to replace the pad and reset the counter with Epson's internal utility. Commercial alternatives (WIC Reset, Adjustment Program) usually charge per reset, serve unaudited binaries, or live on sketchy websites. We propose another way.

### Residual ink

Each cleaning cycle leaves waste ink that collects in the pad.

### Internal counter

EEPROM records the estimated amount until the limit is reached.

### Printer locked

Printing stops to prevent overflows and hardware damage.

## How the free solution works

### Wash or replace the pad

First of all, check the pad or install an external tank. The reset only zeroes the counter — the ink is still there.

### Connect and read the counter

Connect the printer over USB or network. The tool detects your model, reads the actual counter and saves a backup before writing anything.

### Reset and power on

Run the reset, switch the printer off for 10 seconds and turn it back on. Ready to keep printing.

## Important: resetting the counter does not clean the pad

The counter is electronic; the pad is physical. If you do not wash it, replace it, or route the output to an external tank before resetting, ink will eventually leak inside the printer. Always perform the physical maintenance first.

## Which tool should you choose?

There is still no single definitive tool: depending on your OS, connection and model, one option fits better than another. Compare the vetted free options and choose based on facts.
